When animation helps
A ranking animation suits changes in the same set of categories over time. It lets a viewer follow changes in position as well as the values.
For a comparison at one date, a static chart may be easier to read. Choose the question before choosing the animation.
Give the ranking some context
Sales, revenue and market share tell different stories even when the brand names are identical. State the measure, units, period and source.
A higher rank need not mean a higher value: other categories may have fallen further. Read the numbers alongside the movement.
