Test Your Visual Memory

How the Sequence Memory Test Works

This test (a variation of the Simon Game) measures your visuospatial working memory. A grid will flash a sequence of tiles that grows by one step each round. Your goal is to repeat the sequence exactly.

Why Test This?

Short-term memory is a core component of Fluid Intelligence.

  • Processing Power: It dictates how much information you can manipulate in your mind simultaneously.
  • Learning: Strong working memory correlates with faster skill acquisition.
  • Focus: Reaching high levels requires immense attentional control, acting as an endurance run for your brain.

Global Benchmarks

Based on millions of data points:

  • ๐Ÿง  Memory Master (Level 20+): Rare territory, often achieved using mnemonic techniques like chunking.
  • ๐Ÿฆ Exceptional (Level 14 - 18): Top 5% of the population.
  • ๐ŸฆŠ Average (Level 8 - 12): The typical range for healthy adults.
  • ๐Ÿข Room for Improvement (< 7): Could be due to fatigue or distraction.

Tips to Improve

  1. Chunking: Don't memorize individual tiles. Try to see groups of 3-4 flashes as a single shape (e.g., "a triangle", "a line").
  2. Rhythm: Create a mental beat or melody as the tiles flash.
  3. Physical Tracking: Follow the sequence with your cursor or finger (without clicking) to engage muscle memory.
  4. Environment: Minimize distractions. This test is highly sensitive to lapses in focus.
